Plug-in cars are generating a lot of buzz and it’s well known that they may qualify for a $7,500 federal tax credit. Less well known is that they may also qualify for a $5,000 California rebate. The key points of the California rebate are:
- The 2011 Nissan Leaf qualifies, but the 2011 Chevy Volt does not;
- Funding is limited and it’s first come, first served. It is expected that up to 10,000 Leafs will be sold in 2011, but only about 1,200 will qualify based on current funding (latter applicants will be held in a queue in case further funding becomes available); and
- Other lesser-known models qualify and certain qualifying commercial vehicles may be eligible for rebates up to $20,000.
